The Australian rugby league community is in mourning following the untimely death of Wynnum-Manly Seagulls hooker Mitch Cronin, aged 27.

Cronin, who was thanks to celebrating his 28th birthday next Saturday, had stints with the Brisbane Broncos and Canberra Raiders and although he didn't play within the Telstra Premiership, he played within the NRL Nines in Auckland for every club.

He captained the Seagulls to the Intrust Super Cup grand final last year.

His manager, Paul Hogan, confirmed the tragic news to The Courier-Mail on Saturday morning, saying he was found in his parents' backyard pool in Brisbane on Friday after suffering a suspected attack following a weights session.

Cronin, who also represented Queensland Residents over the past four years, played within the opening round of the Intrust Super Cup season last month before the competition was packed up and subsequently canceled thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

A veteran of 108 matches within the Intrust Super Cup, he made his debut in 2014 playing for Souths Logan.

We are devastated by the passing of our captain Mitch Cronin and that we send like to Chris, Andrea, Ben, Amy and therefore the Cronin family," said Wynnum Manly Seagulls chief executive Hanan Laban.

He was an incredible leader who was genuine, caring and selfless together with his actions.

Mitch was a quiet achiever with a humble nature, who didn't get to say an excessive amount of to be held with enormous respect from his peers.

He was fearless on the sector, yet kind and modest off it – Mitch is forever in our hearts.

He spent many times within the Broncos system and that we need to know him well - he was the type of bloke you wanted playing alongside you, and he was highly regarded across all of the rugby league.

We beat mourning today and our thoughts are together with his family, friends and teammates.

Mitchell was an incredible leader of men and a top-quality player," QRL competitions manager Dave Maiden said.

More importantly though, he was a top quality person who is going to be mourned by many and missed by all.

The people that found him are going to be in the state of disbelief … he’s one among the great ones."

His former Raiders teammate Jordan Rapana led the tributes to Cronin on social media, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram
